Ganesha Chaturthi, is very popular as 'Vinayaka Chavithi' or 'Vinayak Chaturthi'. 'Vinayaka Chavithi', a Ganesha festival, is celebrated by Hindus in India where hindus from all part of the world participate in it as they believe the birthday of Lord Ganesha. It is celebrated during mid-August to mid-September. It is considered as the grandest and most elaborate event in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. The festival lasts for 10 days and it ends on the day of 'Ananta Chaturdashi' which is performed on the fourteenth day (known as Chaturdashi) of the bright moon fortnight of in Hindu calendar month of Bhadrapad. It is also celebrated in Nepal, United States and other countries of the world and Indians are in good numbers. Hindu made clay model of Hindu Lord Ganesha in 2-3 months prior to the event of Ganesh Chaturthi. People make them in different sizes that vary from 3/4th of an inch to over 25 feet. Artists decorate and depict Lord Ganesh in different poses to get appreciation and to show their artistic skills. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi begins by installing these Ganesh idoles in decorated homes with different bright colors and specially fix temporary structures mandapas (pandals) in their localities. The pandals are established by the people or by a specific society or locality or group through contributions. The pandals or mandapas are decorated according to requirement of the festival, by installing decorative items like flower garlands, lights, etc. to depict religious themes or current events of that year.
