NSX-AJ20 - How to turn off timer

I cannot turn off the automatic startup timer on my NSX-AJ20. P.17 of the product manual has no definite timer shut-off instructions. They do say "To turn off th timer standby mode temporarily," you should press TIMER button repeated till the <timer-icon> dissapears from the display. Then to restart it, "press again to display <timer-icon>."
Doesn't work, the icon won't disappear.
What to do?
