My router will not connect to the internet half the time.

I have a comtrend ct-5071t router. I am using windows 7 on a HP laptop.
It keeps telling me invalid IP address. I reset it several times, rebooting my computer sometimes helps, but it's getting worse. It took over an hour last time of repeating all the steps to access the internet. Help.....

    Power off all of your network devices, including the modem, Router, and computers. Then power on each device in the following order: Cable or DSL modem Router Computer
