I am trying to find the title and background to a movie I watched many years ago. It was set in frontier Alaska and followed the lives of a prominent family or families as the place headed toward Statehood. I thought it Was Elizabeth Taylor who starred in it but cannot remember. Again I thought it was Call Ice Something or Snow something. It was epic in nature and had a similar feel to the Movie Giant. Can someone tell me the name of this movie? Thanks for any help you can provide.

    Hi there:

I think maybe the one you are thinking of is, \"Ice Palace\" It was made in 1960, starred Richard Burton, Robert Ryan, and Martha Hyer. I know it was about a powerful family, or two powers, fighting over something about Alaska. Burton and Ryan were fighting against the large cannery. It was written by Edna Ferber, and followed the same plot all her books followed. Struggle for power, two men fighting over the same woman, In her books, she just changed the circumstances, and changed the names, and followed to same story line.

The film chases the Edna Ferber novel in telling the story of Zeb Kennedy (Richard Burton) and Thor Storm (Robert Ryan), Alaska settlers in the term following World War I. Kennedy works his way upward through the Alaskan fish cannery business, befriending Wang, a Chinese employee (George Takei), and Storm, an idealistic fishing ship captain. Kennedy and Storm originate to plan a cannery jointly in the fictional Alaskan city of Baranof, as shortly as Kennedy plummets for Bridie Ballantyne, Storm's fiancée (Carolyn Jones). The mood is reciprocated, but Kennedy selects cash across love, marrying Seattle heiress Dorothy Wendt (Martha Hyer). When Storm explores his discouraged fiancée's infidelity, he punches out Kennedy and flees into the bush on a dog sled.
