    The Memphis Mafia is the nickname granted to the assembly of men who were with Elvis Presley everyday from 1956 until the day he passed away on August 16, 1977.
   There were eight initial members; whereas at times, they enumerated between four and thirteen. The centre assembly of initial friends (Sonny West, Red West, Billy Smith, Marty Lacker, and Lamar Fike) was advised to be the nearest to Elvis and became his confidants all through the years.
   The title "The Memphis Mafia" was bestowed on the assembly in an odd way. In the early 1960's, Elvis and the friends often were dressed in very dark mohair suits. One afternoon in Las Vegas on a two-week delight journey, Elvis and the friends went to rendezvous somebody at the Riviera Hotel.
   Elvis and the friends generally resided at The Sahara Hotel. Their usual for Las Vegas was to stay up all evening and doze throughout the day. Elvis and the friends commonly began their day about 5 p.m. However, on that day, the designation at the Riviera Hotel was at 1 p.m. Four hours previous than they commonly got up.
   There was a gathering of persons in front of the Riviera Hotel when the two large-scale very dark limousines dragged up. Elvis and about 10 friends, all wearing very dark mohair matches and sunglasses, got out of the limousines. Because they commonly didn't get much in the sun throughout the day, their coverings were fair white. It was a scary view to behold, and somebody in the gathering yelled: "Who are they, The Mafia?"
   It just so occurred that there was a reporter from a Las Vegas bulletin there. So, the next day, a article ran about what she saw. She named them "The Memphis Mafia." Elvis loved his friends being called that, and the title stuck.
