Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 external drive stopped working.

How can I tell whether the power adapter or the drive is the problem?Drive worked with this same system for a long time. Then went dead - not powered up. Is it likely the power adapter? Is the adapter unique to that external drive, or can I try a different adapter just to test it?

I plugged my hardrive in the usb port, and a message is saying that there it doesn't recognize the device and that there is a malfunction.. Please help! I have extremely important family videos and pictures that can never be replaced. I absolutely can not afford to lose various pics & videos of my 3 year old daughter, and I am willing to open the drive and perform a recovery if shown how to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, this message comes mostly due to the nonavailability of the drivers. so i would request you to first install the drivers of your maxtor personal storage 3100 to your DELL studio computer, then connect your maxtor storage to your DELL computer. this should fix your fix your issue.
