The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that ABC News has hired former kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart to perform as a contributor.

Elizabeth Smart made headlines at the age of 14, as the victim of Salt Lake City preacher and kidnapper Brian David Mitchell. Now, at the age of 23, she'll contribute to ABC News as a reporter on missing person and child abduction cases.

Smart is slated to appear on multiple ABC platforms, including such programs as "Good Morning America" and "Nightline." She is expected to come on the air in the next few weeks.

"This is someone with the perspective to know what a family experiences when a loved one goes missing," network spokeswoman Julie Townsend told the Associated Press on Thursday.

Smart said she's looking forward to building a "beautiful" future that will include working on behalf of missing children. Mitchell, 56, was sentenced to life in prison in May.

"She'll help our viewers better understand missing person stories from someone with the perspective to know what a family experiences when a loved one goes missing," said ABC communications veep Julie Townsend. "And her contributions will be focused on looking ahead, not looking back at her own story."
