Kenwood vr 309

Hello.. I have a Kenwood vr 309 receiver. My question is how do I set the auto volume. When I watch a HD channel I have to turn the volume way up, and then when I switch to a regular channel it blows my ear drums out. I had this setting set properly once, but I had to change out some stuff and had to unplug the receiver, and ever since it's lost its settings to have a level volume from HD to standard channels. Any help would be great. I currently have my receiver set on DVD. It's the only setting it will play sound on.
