   The iPod touch is a beautiful device, but unfortunately Apple restricted a lot of it's potential by locking the firmware. The only way to unlock the full potential of your iPod and install custom applications, ringtones, etc, is to "jailbreak" the iPod, whereby you remove Apple's firmware restrictions. Previously this required opening up the actual iPod and voiding the warranty, but luckily with recent advances you can safely jailbreak your iPod with little to no computer experience, and your warranty will stay completely intact! This is 100% safe, and there is no risk of damaging your iPod if you do it properly. Make sure your iPod is running .3 or .4 firmware, which is the two latest versions. You can see this when you connect your iPod in iTunes. If it is not the newest firmware, upgrade! First, go to download.ziphone.org/ and download either the Windows or Mac version of the jail breaking software, depending on your system. It is 18MB in size, so it may take a couple minutes to download. When you are finished, open the installer, and extract the files to a folder somewhere on your computer. Go to the folder you unzipped ZiPhone to, and open the bottom file, "ZiPhoneGUI.exe".Make sure your iPod is connected via USB cord, and then hit the "Jailbreak" button on the left side of the interface. Leave your iPod connected and let ZiPhone work its magic for a couple minutes until it is done. That's it, you’re done! Unplug your iPod and enjoy your new freedom!
