Since the seeds are inside or attached to the fruiting body the apple is a fruit.

true fruit.....at least the inner part is ovarian tissue(though from inferior ovaries) ..and there is no such thing as a false fruit, it would be classified as an accessory fruit, which is one that has nonovarian tissue present

the apple tree is a member of the rose family and as such i would consider it an edible flower. there are some 25 or 30,000 varieties of apple grown world wide.

My book on fruits advises it is a plump fruit with a shiny skin. Eaten fresh, dried and stored from as far back as the stone age. The original was a wild crab-apple. Once it was the only fresh fruit available in northern Europe in winter. It is believed to aid stomach acidity and constipation. So good to eat as also excellent source of vit C

Its a false fruit. A true fruit is formed from ovary tissue alone such as a cherry. A false fruit contains seeds but has a different origin than the ovary. The flesh of the apple grows form the stem, or the flowering part. The true fruit portion of the apple is its harder core in the apple.

Make sure you are clear with the definitions before you jump to conclusions.

The edible part of apple is the receptacle which turns fleshy, juicy and colourful. If we cut the fruit then we can see a clear demarcation of the inner fruit which is a true fruit in botanical terms. Botanically a fruit is developed from the ovary and seeds from the ovule. In case of apple, real botanical fruit is deep inside the fleshy thalamus. So the edible part cannot be called as a botanical fruit. The inner fruit is a true fruit while the outer fleshy part cannot be called as true fruit in botanical terms.

yes apple is a false fruit..... the edible portion of fruit is thalamus.... not true fruit.. actually true fruit is embedded inside the false fruit.... APPLE is derived from thalamus of plant body....

Smile, Your question is a little bit tricky to answer, but the apple is a true fruit. The apple is a Pome fruit. A fruit consisting of a central “core”, the true fruit formed by several united carpels enclosed within a fleshy receptacle or pseudocarp, as in the genus Malus (apple). So the actual core of the apple is a fruit, the fleshy part of the apple that you eat is a pome of the fruit, which makes some people to call it a false fruit, but it is in reality a true fruit.

True Fruit! Because apples have seeds in side... The tomato for example is a fruit too not a veggie because it also has seeds in side it.

There is a scientific term for it however I don't know the proper name for it....

Both. A fruit is a ripened ovary and the apple is considered a fruit by that definition but only as it is in it's entirety. The actual part that we as people eat is the thickened ovary wall. If you look at an apple blossom closely on the tree and watch as it matures after pollination, you can see the tiny ovary swell (after the initial flower components fall when no longer needed) as it goes from flower part to fruit. Apple is a true and simple fruit that is called a "pome" when viewed as a whole. As the part we eat is one of the components of the total that is called a fruit, so it is. If you want to get technical, we eat the pericarp and discard the seeds. Of the pericarp, the exocarp (skin) and mesocarp (flesh) are eaten while the endocarp containing the seeds (core) is discarded. Your choice of definition depends on how you view the subject. You may wish to see it as a sum of the whole or the parts of the whole as separate entities. In relation to the parts of the whole it is a false fruit.

false fruit

actually an apple is not a fruit but it is considered as a fruit as it is an:

1) accessory fruit

A fruit, such as the pear or strawberry, that develops from a ripened ovary or ovaries but includes a significant portion derived from non ovarian tissue. Also called false fruit, pseudo carp.

                                           AND

2) pome

A fleshy fruit, such as an apple, pear, or quince, having several seed chambers and an outer fleshy part largely derived from the hypanthium. Also called false fruit.
