The Irish Brigade consists of Irish exiles in the French army. When five Jacobite regiments were sent to France then the Irish Brigade was formed at that time in May 1690. It was a sort of reply for a large French force infantry and they were later sent to fight in Ireland. Irish brigade remained the part of French army till the year 1792.
The Jacobite regiments consists of 5000 men and they were associated with the name of their Colonels: Lord Mountcashel, Butler, Fielding, O Brien and Dillen. They lacked the ability and tactics of fight and as a result French took over Butler’s and Fielding’s. The Irish brigade was later formed by the three regiments named Mountcashel’s, Obrien and Dillon and it was a part of the French during the nine years of war between (1689-1697).
Many of the men of King James Army formed a new regiment and it was due to the Treaty of Ryswick in the year 1697. Before the French revolution Irish army served in best possible manner with the French units. Later on Peter Lacy also entered into the Austrian service. The Austrian army became in effect just like French and Poland and it continued fighting for 100 years. The Irish army was later developed and known as elite units of army.
