Instalation of imation dvd writer

i installed the above dvd writer into my pc, by removing the cd writer and replacing it with the dvd writer, now it wont read anything it just tells me unformatted media, so i canot install the drivers, i have tried going back to the cd writer and it does the same .... please helpthank you
