The City staff of Canada recently confirmed that giant hogweed was found in the front yard of a residence on Dufferin Street in downtown Guelph. Jessica McEachern, a biologist by profession who has undertook vegetation identification in the past, inspected the weed with Randy Drury, Guelph’s civic weed inspector. François Tardif, a professional in weed research at the University of Guelph, has verified two situations inside the town limits: the vegetation at the Dufferin Street address and another stand in close by High view Park, where it overflows into a personal backyard. But other ones are not so certain the Dufferin Street vegetation is bona fide hogweed. The inhabitant at the dwelling in inquiry, allegedly an ecologist who has mapped and inventoried hogweed in the past, asserts the vegetation is dairy cow parsnip, and denies eliminating it, McEachern said. “I accept as factual there was a distinction of attitude about what was being observed,” McEachern said. “I don’t believe there was any aim of eliminating it.” Nigel Finney, a natural heritage ecologist with Conservation Halton who furthermore glimpsed the Dufferin Street vegetation, said he is “almost certain” it is hogweed. But if it is hogweed or dairy cow parsnip, they both origin photosensitivity in some persons and should be removed.
