I am working on a small renovation project at a UNC-CH. We have (2) 5'x5' fixed glass windows exposed to an athletic field where field hockey and lacrosse are played. We are replacing the existing glass block with clear glass. The local glass vendor has suggested laminated 1/4"+1/4" tempered safety glass (9/16" overall) but he cannot guarantee it will not crack when hit by a ball. The maximum weight/size/speed of a field hockey ball is 5-3/4 ounces x 9-1/4" x 80mph. Can you calculate whether this glass application would withstand the impact of a ball without cracking? It is highly unlikely the window would receive such a direct hit so this is a "worst case scenario".
