Hi, I would be very grateful if you could give me some advice please. I am thinking of pursuing a career in illustration but do not know where to start. I usually paint landscapes, wildlife etc and so have not really dabbled in illustration work and wondered if you could give me some advice as to where to start and what types of artwork I should put together to build up a portfolio of illustrative work that I could show to potential employers etc? I also have no idea how to get into an illustrative career ( I would like to go freelance) but do not know who to take my work to etc. Any advice would be gratefully received. Also, do you know of anywhere on the web where I can get an idea of how to go about creating illustrations. Thank you for your time and help. Kind Regards: Gary Mead

    Hello Gary,

Unfortunately this is out of my area of expertise except to say that I would contact schools or universities in your area [depending where you live] and talk to their guidance people. Also check on the Internet with keywords like Illustrator Careers Illustrator Association....etc...Etc.

A good portfolio never hurts but specific training also is a help. That is why you might consider some classes in illustration. Another avenue is to contact an illustrator or two at a local newspaper, magazine or if you don't have one in your area check the library for books/magazines that seem to use illustrators call the magazine or publisher and ask to speak to one of their illustrators. It is amazing the cooperation you can expect. If you go to the source and are polite and in need! Best of luck,
