I have a craftsman model 536.886280 snow thrower.

Is the sprocket that hold the drive chain suppose to be tight or does it "float" losely?

    Have a different model but on mine from behind on the left sprocket it has another sprocket that is connected to a spring and is used as a tensioner to take that slack out. Hope this helps
