How were the prisoners of the Spanish Inquisition treated?

I have just read the amazing story " The pit and the pendulum ", by "Edgar Allan Poe". In this story, a prisoner of the Spanish Inquisition is tortured and threated very bad. This story made me wondering what really happened with the prisoners of the Spanish Inquisition, were they also tortured, or not?
