To register a company is California, the first step is to determine the legal structure of your business. If your business is a corporation, a non-profit, a limited liability company or a partnership (limited, or limited liability) you must register with the state of California. If your business is a sole proprietorship, you do not need to register your business with the state. Next step is to select a company name. Individuals or entities doing business for profit under a name different from the owner(s) full legal name(s) must file a Fictitious Name Statement with the County Recorder-Clerk's Office. Corporations, LLCs, LLPs, and limited partnerships have to register an assumed name as part of their required business filings with the California Secretary of State. After that, you have to obtain a EIN or employer identification number. Then register for sales tax and lastly obtain business licenses and permits to operate legally.
