     First of all you convert the time into minutes like
    9*60 = 540 minutes
    12*60 = 720 minutes
    Suppose x is the number of minutes before noon then,
    T = 720-x.
    44 minute ago is t-44
    3 times past 9am is t-44 is equal to 540+ 3x
    t = 584 + 3x
    now you can solve it like
    t= 584+3x………..i
    t=720+3x……………2
    taken first equation
    t=584+3x
    put the value of t in equation
    720-x=584+3x
    4x= 136
    X=34

    Change all hours into minutes past midnight, so 9am = 540 and noon = 720.

    Let suppose x be the number of minutes before noon it is now,
    so present time t is = 720 - x.

    44 minutes ago (t-44) it was 3x past 9am: t-44 = 540 + 3x.

    No you have simultaneous equations to solve:
    t = 720 - x
    t = 584 + 3x

    cancel out t's:
    720 - x = 584 + 3x
    136 = 4x
    x = 34

    Now it is 34 minutes before 12 noon.

     difference between 9 am and 12 noon= 180 min
    let x min ago was the time when 44 minutes ago it was three times as many minutes past 9 a.m.
    so 44 min ago when time was x min to 12 noon time was 3x min past 9am
    so total min in time interval 9 to 12 are 3x + 44 + x = 4x + 44
    hence 4x + 44 = 180
    or 4x=136
    so x=34 min
    so time was 34 min before 12 noon, i.e., 11:26 when 44 min ago it was 3 times as min as many min past 9 am

    I think it might be 44. I am not sure about it.
