Huluhuluwaena seaweeds, kind of algae, are commonly used in many dishes. These are also taken as a medicine for curing many diseases as they are very nutritious and have many health benefits as well. These seaweeds are also used for dying. Fresh seaweeds, both wild and cultivated in the farms, are commonly eaten as food and as local medicine in the Hawaiian Islands. Seaweeds were a regular part of the diet of the local people Before Western contact, and is thought to provide vitamins and essential mineral nutrient snot found in other staple food items. More than twenty-two species of edible Hawaiian macroalgae were found rich in protein,lipid, carbohydrate, ash, caloric, mineral and vitamin content. Halymeniaformosa and Porphyra vietnamensis are considered as the highest in total protein content among the species analyzed there. Many of species have less than 5% crude lipid, although two Dictyota species hadover 16% crude lipid based on dry weight. Soluble carbohydrates ranged from 4.5 to39.9% dry weight. Ash values ranged from22.4% to 64.2%.Dictyotasandvicensis and Monostromaoxyspermum had caloric content each over3000 cal g-1 ash-free dry weight. Almost All the species of seaweeds contained notable amount of11 essential mineral elements. The majority of Hawaiian seaweeds are tested and found containing Beta-carotene (vitamin A), and Enteromorpha flexuosa. So it is verified that these seaweeds have great medicinal importance and can be used as alternative medicines.
