We've lived next door to this couple for almost 2 years. They have a cute little boy that our daughter babysits for and we've spent a handful of social occasions together over the past 2 years. The problem is the husband is not at all handy or mechanically inclined and my husband is good at everything (home repaires, fixing cars, etc). The wife is always dropping comments "It sure would be nice if someone knew how to fix those missing shingles on our roof since my husband is afraid of heights!" and expecting my husband to help them with all of their home improvements. We've hemmed and hawed and made excuses, but they don't seem to get it.
Lately, they've also started to expect us to rescue them whenever they're having a problem. The phone wasn't working and the husband wasn't home, so she came over to our house to get my husband to come fix it. Then their internet service went out and they came over to our house to use our internet and then asked to use our phone to call for technical help because they didn't want to use all the minutes on their cell phone. They sat in our house for almost an hour...even after we set the table for dinner and made several pointed comments about how dinner was ready. They just said "Oh, we've already eaten, go ahead!" and watched us eat while using our computer and telephone.
It seems petty to mention it, but they never reciprocate or offer to reciprocate. It's like we were put on this earth to take care of them. I feel trapped in my own house and I'm tired of having to make excuses or hide in my bedroom so I don't have to talk to them. What should I do??!?!?!
