How do i know if my thumb is broken!?

recently i was playing for my softball team and the ball completely drew back my thumb it is twice its size and has something sticking out the back, they is a bruise by my knuckle and i cant straighten that. it doesnt sound normal to me.. then i ignored it and again it was jammed by playing basketball... ITS HUGE. the pain is excrutiating. HELP!
