How do I tell my mom about my period?

My mom never told my about s*x or periods or anything! Im 13 and she wont let me shave till im 16! She is kinda old fashioned I guess. Im homeschool so I dont have a class about s*x and stuff. I cry sometimes over the stress of wanting to tell her. I want to, but we dont have a close relationship. I know how to tell her but I dont know how to build up the courage to tell her! I am thinking about acting like I dont know what a period is... like saying "mom i have blood in my underwear, what is it?"
Moms out there pleaseeeeee help me understand her point of view!

PS: I use toilet paper for pads.
