Sodium acetate is widely used in the textile industry for neutralizing sulfuric acid waste streams, and also as a photoresist while using it in aniline dyes. It is also known as a pickling agent in chrome tanning, and it provides help to r****d vulcanization of chloroprene in the production of synthetic rubber .
Sodium acetate is also added to foods as a seasoning. It might be used in the form of sodium diacetate with the ratio of 1:1 complex of sodium acetate and acetic acid. It got the E-number E262. In the United States, it is frequently used in salt and vinegar chips. Most of the US brands, including national manufacturer Frito-Lay, use this chemical to give the flavor of salt and vinegar in chips. It is used with lactose and smaller percentages of other chemicals, for the preparation of a real salt and vinegar taste.
A solution of sodium acetate and acetic acid can act as a buffer to keep a relatively constant pH as the conjugate base of a weak acid. The chemical is very useful in biochemical applications where reactions are pH dependent.
Sodium acetate is commonly consumed in consumer heating pads or hand warmers and is also consumed in hot ice. Sodium acetate trihydrate crystals melting point is 58°C to dissolve in their water of crystallization. The aqueous solution becomes supersaturated when they are heated to around 100°C, and subsequently allowed to cool. This solution can be cooled at room temperature without making crystals.
