My roommate and I are both on a 12-month lease in Wake County, NC. We agreed to split rent, utilities, and groceries. Because of lack of effort in his self-employment and/or poor financial planning, he's been unable to meet his obligations for months. When I ask him to agree to modifying the lease by either removing himself and/or downgrading to a cheaper apt (for a small penalty), he refuses and won't willingly leave. What can I do? I don't have the money to nor do I want to keep paying his share.
