There is quite an interesting history behind this incident. Back in November 1959, Billy Sullivan, the Boston business executive was granted the eighth and final franchise of the developing American Football League (AFL). In the very next winter, the locals were asked for their ideas about the Boston football team’s official name. Among all the available choices, “Boston Patriots” was selected and its logo designed as “Pat Patriot”. The Patriots struggled for a long time for not having their home stadium. Somewhere around the early 1970s, the Patriots moved to a new stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, which was to serve as their home for 30 years. Consequently, the Patriots announced changing their name from the Boston Patriots to the Bay State Patriots. Somehow, the name they chose was rejected by the NFL and on March 23, 1971, the team officially announced they would become the New England Patriots. Quite remarkably, after becoming the New England Patriots, the team went on to gather a number of successes before becoming well-known by year 1976.
