Hollow poplar tree

I have 2 very tall poplar trees in my garden. Both from a distance look lovely and healthy, always producing fine leaves. One of them however is, what looks like completely hollow. It does look like squirrels are/have been nesting inside. My concern is. Is this killing the tree. And if so, is there a possibility that the tree will fall in high winds?
