The instrumental Boca Juniors playmaker scored four goals in Argentina’s first three group matches in qualification, but was not selected by coach Diego Maradona when he took over in October 2008. Riquelme subsequently quit in March 2009 as Argentina’s struggle worsened.

There's little doubt that Argentina have been hit hard by Riquelme's absence. Prior to him quitting the national setup, Argentina had looked formiddable and a dead cert to make a big impact at the 2010 World Cup. His incisive passing, dead-ball accuracy and eye for goal made him one of the best international midfielders in the game. Although Seba Veron is in the same mould, Riquelme plays with an extra authority, which allows him to truly control a match. And the absence of his link-up play with Lionel Messi has limited the Barcelona forward's influence too. People can blame Maradona if the nation fails to reach the World Cup - but they should surely pinpoint his decision to cast Riquelme into the international wilderness as his main failing?

Of course they have missed him,any team would. When he doesnt play for Boca or Argentina then the team falters due to his absence.Without Riquelme then Argentina dont have the link between defence to midfield and midfield to attack. The sooner Diego gets with Riquelme and sorts this out then the better for Argentina and world football as a whole.
