Question:

Am I too young to start adult ballet for beginners?

I have no dance experience whatsoever, but I have been thinking about taking up ballet for a long time and did nothing about it. If I take classes, is it possible for me to start at grade 4. It sounds silly but I do not want to learn alongside 10 year old ballerinas when i am of 15 years of age. Thanks in advance for your help.

Ballet is a beautiful dance that needs perfection which comes from years of constant practice. Ballet dancers train their bodies by practicing and learning for years in dance schools to prefect their jeté, their rand de jambre, their relevé. If you start ballet dancing at a young age, you would develop your skills much faster as a dancer in ballet than others who take up late.

Beginning level ballerinas have limited knowledge of ballet and need to do simple exercises in order to commit basic steps such as plie and tendu to their muscle memory. If you feel uncomfortable with practicing with your tenth grade class mates and feel a bit aged for all these beginner techniques and exercises, you can take up various other classes for ballet which are for 15 years of age and older to make you feel that you fit in. Such classes include Musical Theatre Dance classes and Adult Modern Dance Classes. Usually when open adult classes are offered, people from ages 18-80 may show up.
Wish you all the best in your practices.
