Mijas itself is a village above Fuengirola (15 minutes or less in a car). Are you sure you are not actually going to Mijas Costa? This is a large area that extends down to the coast west of Fuengirola. 'Campo' in the sense used here simply means 'countryside'. They live in the campo is the equivalent of saying They live in the wilds. Temperature on Saturday was 34 degrees, no rain for months.
