Garmin GPSmap 498 GPS screen display is barely visible and backlight adjustments are ineffective. What is the problem and am I able to replace or repair this myself?

the map display is stuck from the last time i used it. can not get new information to appear.

This is not an answer but i do not see a way to comment otherwise. I have the same unit with the same problem, the backlight is ineffective, I am only able to see the screen when there is direct sunlight on it. The adjustment to the backlight does nothing. I removed the 8 screws to open up the unit, but did not see anything that looked like I could fix with my limited knowledge. I am considering having a professional repair the unit, but at $100 an hour it would be better if I could fix it myself. Did you find a solution to this problem, other than shipping it to a Garmin service office? Thanks Zak, Sitka Alaska
