Question:

Why does the Female zucchini flower does not bloom open?

I decided to grow my zucchini plant vertically because it was taking up valuable space in my garden bed. It had been growing on the ground for a while and actually produced some delicious vegetables. Somehow, when I started to tie it up, the vegetables became unhappy and took on a rather deformed shape, and we got a couple of fruits for the labor. I finally got it trained and growing upward; the fruits formed, but then yellowed and withered away prior to the blossoms opening. Now I have several female flowers with huge courgettes, but the blossoms refuse to open. The whole plant seems to be stuck. I have new seedlings planted so I can pull this particular plant when the others start to produce. Meanwhile, I am wondering if I should just go ahead and eat the fruit before it blossoms, or wait to see what happens next.

The female flower is a golden blossom on the end of each emergent zucchini. The male flower grows directly on the stem of the zucchini plant in the leaf axils, where leaf petiole meets stem, on a long stalk, and is slightly smaller than the female. Well, I have to say that the zucchini in the picture just gave up the ghost. Squash plants are really quite fragile. I have put in another zucchini plant since I pulled the plant in question, and have been training it to grow vertically as well. I have a bamboo stake in the ground and some 6 inch square fencing that I have propped up for the zucchini, tomato and beans to grow. It certainly adds more room, and the potential for zucchini from that one plant looks good.
