I saw it on TV in the late 60s Late Show or poss Sunday afternoon (not prime time). There were 3 stories of a dress coat:First a love triangle or a battle of honor ending in a duel leaving a bullet hole in the coat. Second,the hole mended,it becomes the formal attire of a church sextant. The elders are ashamed that their janitor  is illiterate and offer him the choice to learn to read or resign his position. Feeling too old to learn he resigns. Walking home with his wife he looks for a tobacco shop to fill his pipe and notices there are none in the neighborhood. With some money they have saved he opens a tobacco shop. His son in law loses his job and they open a second shop for him to run. they open more shops and a day comes when  the finances grow to where he must go to the bank to sign some papers. When the bank manager sees this very successful man sign with an X he exclaims "What you could have been if you could read & write!" The man replies:"I would be a church janitor". The coat ends up in the goodwill box. The third story involves a starving composer who has been invited to conduct an orchestra of some fame performing his music. He does not have the proper attire for this performance (black tie & tails). A frindly woman who understands what a great opportunity this is for him takes the coat from the goodwill box and tailors it to fit him. He walks out proudly and begins to conduct but the stiching  on the sleeves has been done hastily and begins to unravel. He rips of the rest of the coat and weeps with shame now that everyone knows of his poverty. A man near the front silently stands and  removes his coat and folds it over his chair and in his shirtsleaves says "Please continue I am enjoying  the music". One by one every man in the audience  removed their coat until all were in shirtsleaves. The conductor upon seeing the support (and class) from the audience stood up and delivered an excellent performance.  These are stories I remember hearing from my father, they are probably folk tales that someone put in movie form. I think it was shown on one of the Classic TV cable channels. So, the film was quite old. I do not know the name, the actors or the plot. But what I remember was a scene that depicted about a dozen women in labor in a maternity ward. What was so entertaining was how badly this movie depicted labor and birth. None of the women looked pregnant, nor did they act like they were in labor. I think at least one of them was knitting while she "waited her turn" to go into delivery. One by one they were wheeled out to delivery and then they would return after they had given birth. I don't think they showed any babies, just the women returning. And the whole subject of birth was treated like a very serious and scary thing. Anyway, I am a midwife now and I would sure love to know what movie this was and try to find a copy of it. Movie #1 - Spence, a young black man who is growing up in the Northern States around 1959, gets expelled from school for challenging one of his highschool teachers, then he goes and smokes a cigar in the bathroom. He goes home to talk to his Gramma, and then goes out to get away from getting in trouble from his father - a bank teller. Later on, his Gramma dies, and this is where I fell asleep and missed the rest of the movie!! He is a very good looking young man in this movie, and I was wondering who the actor is, and what the movie was called. Movie #2 - A family living in a remote area, has a "plane" fly over their house and it lands in the desert somewhere on their property. The "plane" is actually a UFO that is emitting a mind-controlling alien's high pitched sound that makes all the animals turn evil, and the family starts to feel it too. They also have a friend on their property who is mute, his name is Carl. The daughter's name in the movie is Sandy, and their dog's name is Duke. Duke dies in the movie because he tries to attack the mother. At the end of the movie, they stand up to the alien in the UFO, and he blasts off back to where he came from. Maybe she's too "common" or has a bad past? She's kinda messed up about it for awhile and gets into drinking, I believe, but then she runs into this guy again and he feels sorry and sticks by her this time. Somewhere in here she learns that she has this fatal disease. It starts by her not being able to feel different textures very well - I distinctly remember a scene in a doctor's office where she's blindfolded and given a couple objects of different textures. One's rough and one's smooth, but to her they feel the same. The doctor tells her it's fatal, and she'll know she's near the end when her vision starts going. I think at this point she's about to marry the guy, so she doesn't tell him. (Maybe she does tell him later though?) They get married, and he's a doctor searching for a cure for something. Near the end of the movie, he's heading out for a meeting or conference or something where he's going to present his research, a big discovery I think. Just before he leaves, she starts to complain that it's getting dark. Her housekeeper or somebody knows what that means, but the girl decides to keep this from her husband so he can go tell the world about his medicinal discovery. Near the end she can barely see him at all, but she pretends she's fine and urges her husband to go with an inspiring speech. He leaves and she goes upstairs to her room to die quietly. The film I want is NOT titled "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" and the story is not the same. I'm looking for a black and white film from times gone by.  It takes place in England.  I remember 2 of the scenes -- one scene takes place in a restaurant or bar or social club and they have a woman available there to tell fortunes or do astrology.  This might be just a barroom, I don't remember, but the place is fairly well appointed, not shoddy.  I think the "psychic" woman is there for 2 reasons.  First, it lends a little celestial glamour to the establishment.  Also, I think there is a change in fate and destiny and this plot development happens shortly after one of the main characters ventures into this nightclub (I think it's the woman who tries going there alone one night, just for something to do). The other scene is when the 2 main characters (in the film a romance between them is developing) begin to have an argument.  They are walking down the street, possibly in the evening.  A policeman comes into the frame, and hearing that they are having a disagreement he says something near to this : "If you two are going to do that you can go home to do it" Also, there might be a line about the heart being a desperate organ or some such line.  I believe this line was part of the overall theme and used during the end of the movie and that, because of its similarity to the Carson McCuller title, I remembered the whole movie as being named "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." I remember seeing it on TV years ago.  Who knows, maybe it was a double feature, and I am totally wrong, lol. I looks like it may have been made in the 40's film, but that’s just a guess. All I can remember is the plot. There are 3 main characters an old woman, a young girl, and a young boy. The old woman was hurt, by a man she loved, when she was younger. She was hurt so bad that it consumes her life. She wears her wedding dress all the time and never leaves the house. She kesps the table set for a large feast that was suppose to happen after her wedding. She even raised this young girl to be her weapon against men. She teaches the young girl how to make men fall in love with her, but to never be in love. Thus torturing anyone that falls in love with her. The boy and the girl played as children and were very fond of each other. The boy leaves. I can’t remember why, but there is a time laps that allows for the girl to become a young women and the boy to become a young man. When he returns he pursues a relationship with the girl and learns that she has changed. It now hurts to be around her even though he loves her. The young girl tells him about how she has been raised and that she is not allowed to love. He pursues the relationship anyway and tried to fix her. It takes place after WW2 I think, and a girl runs away from her boarding school to her home in New York, or Northern State of some kind.  Anyway she finds a Hobo and his small dog living in the house which is usually deserted at that time of year.  She doesn't give her real name and The Hobo decieds to let her stay and more seem to come with her, some ex-service men.  Then her father shows up and she gets him to pretend to be someone else(the owner of the house)He doesn't like it but he does it.  Then the mother shows up(they are divored) and something about some kind of (scumdillin stew) and how he only likes her mothers(if I remember right the mother was named Mary)  But all these unusual people end up contributing to a Christmas together.  It was a fantastic story, and if you can find me the title or the movie itself I would greatly appreciate it.
