My laptop's speakers and my earphones, do not work. I have tried everything possible even complete new installation of OS, replacing daughter board, internal speakers... Nothing seems to fix the problem. The only time I get any sound from the speakers is when I'm trying to click on a wrong button (like F4, etc) during start up loading. The computer beeps and even makes sound when using Ghost restore CD. One more thing... I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem, but I remember when I bought this laptop a long time ago, whenever I pressed the controls for adjusting the volume, it had shown bars on the screen. Now, I don't have anything showing on the screen at all, no matter what button I press. Do you know what application do I need to fix that? I have no clue and there doesn't seem to be anything available in the HP support page. I updated all drivers, everything seems to be in order. I am in need of testing thoroughly my sound card and its diagnostics. Are there any tools for that? I suspect my sound card is being the culprit. Laptop Model: HP Pavilion dv4170us SoundMax Sound card Please, help. Thank you. ANSWER: Hi David, yes there is a little program that makes the volume appear on the screen when you adjust it. This app normally comes with the drivers you download from, in your case, HP. I personally turn mine off, so I know that this won't keep your sound card from working. The sound that you hear when using Ghost or during startup, isn't using Windows, or the Windows device driver for your sound card, so that makes me think the problem may be just with Windows and its drivers. What I think we should check first is to see if Windows sees the sound card and thinks it's working. To do that, right click on my computer and select properties, or go through control panel and select the system properties. On the hardware tab, click the device manager button, and then scroll down to sound, video and game controllers. You should see your soundmax card listed there and there should not be any yellow exclamation points or red X next to it. If it's not listed at all, see if you have things listed under "other devices" that could be it. If that looks ok, try going into sounds and audio via the control panel and looking on the audio tab. In the top box, make sure the default playback device is set to your soundmax card. You can also test play sounds from there. Let me know what you find. Shot ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: In the device manager everything is fine and SoundMax is listed without any problem, "?" or "!". In the Control Panel the default device is listed as SoundMax and all volume bars are all the way up. As speakers I have slected Laptop Speakers. Tests, do not generate any sound besides a little crack in the speakers whenever it is suppose to play a sound. Appreciate your fast response. I have a canon pc 740 toner monochrome copier. I received it used but did not have any operating instructions for it. It prints great after I changed the toner cartridge but I can't seem to figure out how I can make copies of a multiple page document at once. I presently have to copy each page using the upper glass copy section. There is a slot on the right side of the machine. I can enter paper in this slot, the machine ingests it and spits it out where the printed page normally comes out but no copy. I feel as though I am overlooking something very simple.
