I have a pitch meeting this month with two companies. When I meet with the first company, should I tell them I have a meeting with another company for the same show idea? I figure if I do that, it might make them either give me a YES I'M INTERESTED or NO I'm NOT INTERESTED reply instead of the we'll get back with you.

I would like to change the show title if possbile to another title. Do I have to resubmit everything to the copywrite office in dc and with the Writers Guild or is there a such thing as copywriting a title for a show?

ANSWER: Hi.

It has always been my understanding that you cannot copyright a title or an idea. I would recommend, however, that you contact an attorney who specializes in intellectual property and seek his/her advice, as this is a very specialized area of the law (I'm not an attorney, so it would be inappropriate for me to offer advice here).

If I can help with anything else, please don't to ask. Good luck!

Marrissa

QUESTION: Hello Marrissa,

Thank you for your response.
I have two pitch meetings with two production companies next month and would like to know if it is a good idea to leave them a copy of my show synopsis if they ask for it? I've always heard that all they have to do is change one thing and its no longer your show. Also is this true? If I leave the synopsis with them, isn't that giving them the opportunity to create their own show within my show. Also when you send a company an intellectual property notice and ask for your material to be returned, why is it they don't return it or respond back to you?

                                      Sincerely,

                                       Marc-Los Angeles

what is meant by Financing/ROI?

Hello Marrissa,

First off, I took the time to look through your past answers to see if anything reflected my question, and I couldn't find anything.

That said, here is my scenario:

I have several ideas for television shows that are offshoots of several websites of mine. I have already talked to a finance person who knows people that can finance the production of the shows [et al], and they might invest in them personally as well.

I have already talked to someone in the industry, and I think that I can put each episode in the can for between 5k and 10k per episode [sans celebrity appearances]. I would like to shoot between 8 and 13 episodes of each show (I can crossboard several of them) so that I already have either a full season, or enough to fill in for shows that get cancelled. Nonetheless, I want to have so many episodes on hand so that I can worry less about someone else copying the idea and getting it to market sooner.

I can have everything ready for the next NAPTE conference, and while my budget would be 10K per episode, my contact says that I should budget 20K per episode.

Outside of all of this, my true question revolves around what percentage or deal that I should strike with the investor(s). I am bringing to the table the concept/idea, the talent, the resources (wardrobe, locations, product placement --unpaid), and will be the main producer. I plan on setting up a new company to be a joint venture between myself and the investors, but the main issue is what type of deal to strike with them, and how much to give up, whether on a decreasing basis [as time goes on, and they get their initial and then double their investment back], or on a fixed percentage.

If they are happy with the quality of the work, they might back me for my own production studio.

Thanks in advance

just saw your great answer on registering a TV show in the US, do you know if something like the wga exists in Europe? Or in other words, if a concept is registered with the WGA, can it be "taken" by a showrunner in Europe without payment or is it protected globally then?
