When I bring up marriage he says he's not ready yet emotionally and will be one day. He says he does want to get married some day but that he doesn't want to be pushed into it. After our scheduler told me about the couple, he informed me that my request to cut back to 0.8 was not possible and in fact, there would be additional hours for everyone (we are salaried). I told him I would do my best to be optimistic although a 0.8 position was really what I had hoped for. Now a friend of the scheduler is looking for a job, and he has asked me to consider going to 0.5 time with minimal benefits.I can't afford to do this but I am not a partner, so I suppose they can force me out too. I also don't want to get fired.  How do I approach him about his attitude?   My second problem is my supervisor/co-worker.  That, in itself is a big part of the problem.  I'm  not exactly sure what she is or her relationship to me professionally speaking.  Mostly, I report to her and then she reports to our boss.  That's why I thought it was ok to do what she asked me to do, which is also what our boss berated me for doing. She asked me to give our boss some kind of excuse whenever she's late to work and cover up for her.  I really pride myself on being an honest person and when she asked me to do it, it made me really uncomfortable.  But I figured that since I work under her, if anyone gets in trouble for being dishonest, it would be her for giving me that order-not me for abiding by it.  So I did it.  Then, I got caught and our boss screamed at me and gave me a lecture on honesty.  I never told my boss that she put me up to it thinking that she would come to my aid and say that she gave me that order.  But she never did and allowed me to take the blame. This sort of thing has happened on several occasions and I would avoid listening to her altogether except when I do that, I get in trouble with her.   She bosses me around like she's my supervisor but when something goes wrong and our boss yells at me, she just says, "don't worry. It'll all blow over," and takes no responsibility w/ our boss.  So my question to you is this:   Should I just go ahead and tell my boss that this woman is the source of everything I've been doing wrong or should I just use my own judgment when it comes to things, even if it means pissing her off and causing a bad relationship btw us? Also, my boss isn't coming in for the next few days, and this same co- worker/supervisor told me that if anyone asks where our boss is, LIE.  Is this not deja vu? ANSWER: Pat -- Wow. Sounds like a pretty horrible situation. First, you need to get clear what your work relationship is with this other woman. You're going to need to meet with your boss -- informally might be best, rather than right in his office. Tell him you're enjoying your internship, learning a lot and you're very grateful for the opportunity. Then say you're a little confused about the chain of command, and you need some clarification. Say that this woman sometimes give you direction on things and it conflicts with things the boss has told you, and when that happens you're unsure of who to listen to. You can also say to him that, sometimes, when he gets very frustrated with you he speaks rather loudly and it makes you very nervous. Tell him you always want to know when you're made an error in your work, but you find it difficult to concentrate when people get very loud and confrontational. Second, you need to stand up to this woman and, politely, tell you that you're not going to cover for her when she disappears. Tell her in the future that, if the boss asks where she is, you're going to say, "I'm not sure, but she called in a while ago" and leave it at that. And as far as lying about your boss' whereabouts, you don't need to lie to people. If anyone asks where the boss is, say, "I'm not sure, but I think Helen knows" and put it on her. It's clear to me that this woman is never going to stand behind anything she tells you to do that isn't on the up-and-up, so don't give her the opportunity. If it comes down to either you or her, say to your boss, "I'm so sorry. I was just following what Helen told me to do. If this happens again, how do you want me to respond?" Some bosses are yellers, but you shouldn't have to put up with being treated like dirt. Stay professional; stay calm; don't let yourself be drawn into their drama. One book I recommend a lot to people is Shaun Belding's "Winning With the Boss From Hell". It's excellent, and should give you some insight into dealing with many different kinds of difficult bosses. ---------- FOLLOW-UP ---------- QUESTION: Thank you so much for your advice.  However, I'm afraid that I still have a problem.  I just had a talk with this woman and she clarified that she is, indeed, my supervisor. However, when I brought up the incident where I got in trouble on her behalf, she said, "don't worry about it.  He's over it. It's really not a big deal. He's not angry with you, that's just how he talks to people."  I told her that I already know how he comes off but that's not why I'm upset at the moment. I'm upset because he still thinks poorly of my character and she's not doing anything to change that, especially since SHE'S the reason he thinks this way of me. After I said that, she responded that that same day, our boss asked her how I was doing as far as my work and she said that I'm doing an excellent job.  I'm appreciative of that, but she's still not owning up to the mistakes she's causing me to make! And who's to say if she really told him that or not? She could've just made that up to get me off her back and to make it seem as though she's looking out for me so my getting in trouble for her is not being done in vain. If I tell my boss that this woman is behind my screw-ups and I get her in trouble, she may spite me by giving our boss negative reports about me and my work, resulting in a bad recommendation at the end of my internship. If I keep covering for her and taking blame for her mistakes, my boss may end up giving me a bad recommendation anyway.  So there you have it-the quintessential catch 22.  What's a frustrated intern to do? You say you're afraid you'll be moved to another department; but if you're so unhappy where you are, and are so badly treated, why would that be a bad thing? ANSWER: Hi Whitney. I don't think you are over-reacting at all. The act was immature and it was an invasion of privacy. Granted, these women were having fun and felt it was harmless, but that doesn't excuse the behavior. In this situation, the onus is now on your fiance to establish some boundaries with his coworkers between his personal and professional life. He doesn't have to go overboard, but the cell phone is a great example here of personal property where a boundary should exist. It may be fun now to play with coworker's cell phones and tease each other about personal information, but should a work relationship go astray, all that personal information that was once freely exchanged can backfire and be used for hurtful and detrimental reasons. I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but your fiance is better off not even putting himself at risk. I have already talked to someone in the industry, and I think that I can put each episode in the can for between 5k and 10k per episode [sans celebrity appearances].  I would like to shoot between 8 and 13 episodes of each show (I can crossboard several of them) so that I already have either a full season, or enough to fill in for shows that get cancelled.  Nonetheless, I want to have so many episodes on hand so that I can worry less about someone else copying the idea and getting it to market sooner. I can have everything ready for the next NAPTE conference, and while my budget would be 10K per episode, my contact says that I should budget 20K per episode. Outside of all of this, my true question revolves around what percentage or deal that I should strike with the investor(s).  I am bringing to the table the concept/idea, the talent, the resources (wardrobe, locations, product placement --unpaid), and will be the main producer.  I plan on setting up a new company to be a joint venture between myself and the investors, but the main issue is what type of deal to strike with them, and how much to give up, whether on a decreasing basis [as time goes on, and they get their initial and then double their investment back], or on a fixed percentage.   If they are happy with the quality of the work, they might back me for my own production studio. Jobs in pakistan and the salaries people get depends on many different factors. The IT job market in pakistan is not efficient, which means employees and employers can get away with just about anything. Normally supply and demand determines the direction of the labor market and in Pakistan in certain markets like Islamabad an unrealistic salary graph has been created. If you scan the IT jobs on different sites in Pakistan you will see the data that is as wide as the corrupted politician’s bank account. Salaries are ranging from 15k to 80k and the required experience is not substantially different. The fastest way to get a salary increase is to work with few of the well established companies and within a year or two your starting salary will be doubled. Furthermore when a new company enters the market, they tend to pick employees from companies who have a good brand in the market. These new companies will offer in some cases 100% markup to pooch employees. Salary increase in Islamabad or some other parts of Pakistan compared to a western country clearly shows the shift in labor market.
