I'm not 30, I'm 21...but have put in enough time trying to be something I'm not. I spent a few years at college doing something I hated, and have never been able to figure out where my life is going.

I've always wanted something big, I've dreamed of being an actress, not just because of the fame..but because when you watch television or a movie and connect with the story, get inspired, cry, laugh, feel something, it can make your life just a little bit better. I want to be able to do that. Unfort. my dreams are not small. While I do not need to be the next Julia Roberts, I want to be known for doing it well.

Besides the point, I am in a rut. I never actually thought I could ever move to LA and become an actress. One day not too long ago I just asked myself, "why not?" I have given myself a year, to get it together, and then I am going to California to go back to college and study theater/drama/acting.

The downside, I do not have the look. I have a lot of work to do as far as my appearance goes..which is one of the reasons I never believed I had a chance.

I guess my question is, is it impossible? I know the percentages, and how much the odds are against me...but I can't stay and settle for a life that makes me unhappy.

I am prepared to give everything up for this. My life, my job (which I really won't be sorry about), my live-in boyfriend of three years. I am at a point where everyone expects me to be married by next year, and being normal and dependable. But I can't do it, I feel like I have almost thrown my dreams away because I didn't major in what I wanted to major in, and did not go to school where I wanted to. I didn't pursue this further. I have no training, but I am not going to give up.

I've been reading a lot on actors/actresses that are in tv and how they got their starts...I guess you need to be in the right place at the right time.

Everyone on here asks the same thing..what chance do I have? I need to know where do I start once I get there? Good schools for acting (that will take transfer credit), places to go, how to start...I don't care if I have to live out of a suitcase forever...at least I could say I tried.

Im in the Army too and I know that must be hard on you.
Okay, on to the reason I came here... I've been half-assed trying to 'be a model' on and off for a couple of years. Recently (within the last 6 months or so), I've been taking it more seriously. I've been doing TFP shoots and the like ( I have about 8 photo shoots under my belt). Every photographer I've worked with has commented about how beautiful I am, and how I move so well, and how my pictures come out so great, how I have such a great 'look.' My questions are as follows: If I have such a "great look" why can't I get any work. I scour every (non-paying...I'm broke) source I can and submit pictures and a little blurb for every job i even come CLOSE to qualifying for... NO LUCK?! what gives? I have fairly reasonable expectations: I'm only 5'7" (and not unusually thin) so I understand runway and high fashion modeling aren't really realistic, but I like to think I qualify for SOME work... at least to make some $$ to pay for what i spend trying to model. SECOND QUESTION: I'm under the impression your comp card is supposed to have your most recent, strongest images, and they're not supposed to be older than 6 months. If that's the case, is a model supposed to get a whole new set of comp cards every 6 monts? THIRD QUESTION: What are the investments a model "should" make/would be most benificial for her/him? and their approximatel costs? (besides, of course investing in themselves, physically and mentally)...like website? professional website? compcards? business cards? subscriptions to casting services (which ones)? etc. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP... and here's alink to my omp page (im model #115573 incase it doesn't work). http://www.onemodelplace.com/member.cfm?ID=115573 -Electra Jade

auditions for harry potter and the deathly hallows

who know when and where auditions for ariana dumbledore for harry potter and the deathly hallows are going to be held? My name is Jessica. I am and 18 year old college student and
have recently become interested in the (very) extensive acting
world.

There are so many monologues out there! I was just wondering
if you know of a good source to start looking. I'd like to show a
breadth of emotions, and get a few strong monologues under
my belt, but I'd also like them to not be the same ones that
casting directors have heard hundreds of times.

Thank you so much for your input, I really appreciate it.

I know what channels I want these 3 different commercials on, they vary in their purpose. I understand add agencies are out there to facilitate everything from creation to airtime contracts, but since I have nobody I trust that I can consult I figure this email the best starting point.

So here are my questions:

Q#1.
What entity is best for direct inquiry for best estimate/costing of spot rates. In particular one of the commercials are intended for BET (black audiences), another for latin america (univision & telemundo) and finally the last for mainstream america.

I have done some research and got all the phone #'s I need but have doubts as to whom to direct myself to or whether to call the show I want the commercial to show on or the channel or the network, the department, how to request spot rate, etc etc?

Q#2.
The themes of the commercials I intend to see made a reality are in general, anti-drug/violence pro studies <for adolescents>, supermarket branding, and food label branding.

What specialty should I seek in the producer/director that will be in charge of taking my vivid descriptions of what I want and draft script and making them a reality?

Q#3.
I would like to integrate spongebob in the food branding commercials. Who should I talk to to get proper permission and/or pricing for this?

Thank you

Question -
My wife and I just saw a wonderful production of "Cats" in McAllen Texas. On road tours like this one, where does the cast and other members of the production sleep and eat? There were over 40 members of the cast and orchestra and who knows how many crew members. This was a fantastic production with amazing talent, as good as we have seen in New York. The theatre was packed, we paid $50 each for the tickets. Can you describe life on the road? How do they put on a show for 2 evenings in McAllen, sleep and eat and then move and be refreshed enough to put on a show for the next 2 evenings in San Antonio? The singers and dancers were fantastic. Where do they get such talented people?
Answer -
Life on the road is hectic, to say the least. The show you saw has a very large crew, and after they set up in one city, they typically go to the next city -- ahead of the cast -- to have the venue set up for the performers. Most of the non-travelling downtime is spent rehearsing; and if not rehearsing, then resting, because the company is CONSTANTLY travelling.

OK. Where do the cast and crew sleep? Does the company make enough money to put them in hotel rooms? Where do they eat?

How can I peruse my career in acting?

hi. -----Question-----
Many years ago I found a passion in film and theatre and perfroming arts. Like most others I couldn't make a living at it from the perfromance or tech side. I have resolved that I'm not pro enough for acting or directing. However, I now have the money to underwrite a small project and I'd love to produce a short film and get it to film festivals. Where do you recommend that I begin looking to find a script, director, actors, cinematographer, etc.
-----Answer-----
Don,

Thanks for writing. I wouldn't share this with too many people - you'll be inundated with calls from every wannabe looking to take your money for their epic film.

First, let me ask a couple of questions. In what state/city do you live? If you're in Los Angeles, it's fairly easy to find potential projects. If you're out of state, it's a bit more of a challenge.

Second, when you say you have money to invest in a film, are you talking about something like 10k or is it more in the realm of 100k? The reason I ask is that a film can be made for almost any price. It just depends upon what those involved expect to see on screen at the end of the day. Meaning, if you expect big stars, your film costs a lot more. If you plan to shoot on DV Cam, then it can cost a lot less. So, think about what your own personal parameters are with respect to the kind of project in which you wish to be involved.

For example, I have just begun meeting with a director/writer and a 2nd Unit Director/Stunt Coordinator about a short film that the 2nd Unit guy wants to make. He has 50k that he's willing to invest because he wants to use it as a calling card for his career. I've matched him up with the director/writer I know and the three of us are starting to toss around ideas for a potential short. With what the 2nd unit guy hopes to achieve, 50k may be a little light, but that's why we need to talk about the story, the characters, the stunts, and what is truly feasible for that kind of money.

I encourage you to begin thinking of your own ideas or project parameters so you know what you're willing to do and what you're willing to invest. Remember that most short films don't make money - they are generally used as calling cards or showcases to get the filmmakers their next bigger project in which they CAN make money.

Hope this helps. BTW, if you're interested in investing in our project, we can certainly talk about it.

Good luck!

This is all she talks about. Many people told me that she has the look and personality to be on TV. So like any other mother I starting doing some research. We went to Barbzion, Page Parkes, and Neal Hamil Agency's in Houston. We ended paying for classes with Neal Hamil and at the end of the classes being told to now get a professional photo shoot done on top of the $650 I have already spent. The professional shoot will be an additional $300. How do we really know that these places are not scams. My daughter is guaranteed a 6 month contract after we get the professional photo shoot done, but still does not guarantee work. Then I was looking on the rip off report and found some of the agency's I was talking about. Can you tell me if the agency's I named are any good? Can you tell me what I could do in the situation? Can you tells is where we might be able to find a good reliable agent in Houston, TX? My husband and I are tired of the run arounds and are starting to believe that there is no such thing. Beyonce Knowles is the biggest thing that came from our area and she is not here to help her neighbors out at all.

How to become a professional actress?

Hey. I am a drama graduate (minor) of the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and have recently moved back to Little Rock. I wanted to try my hand at the local modeling and acting scene (especially commercials) and I've been able to find a few local agencies online. However, I have no idea who is any good.

Do you know of any discussion boards/newsgroups where Arkansas-based actors and models can go and discuss their experiences with different companies and get the “heads-up”?

Also, I have never modeled or done TV/film work before. Any advice on how to find a agent, what kind of head shots I'll need, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

(Not because she is family)! Her father is a very talented photographer, and Bryana (the child) has posed for photographs since she was born. Her dad made a CD with some shots of her which I would like to expose to a professional and get an honest opinion of how to pursue a career for this young lady. I do not consider her a raging beauty, but she has a congenial appearance, fantastic awareness of detail and expression. Her ability to precisely mimic an individual's body mechanics, verbal communication, and vocalization, is remarkable.
The question is: What path should I take in seeking an HONEST reconnoiter. I want to avoid scams, and profiteers. I've had the dream of becoming an actress since i was literaly an embryo. I am now thirteen, and i would do anything to become an actress. There is nothing i love more than to act. However, i like in Oakville, Ontario.. and it is sort of impossible to become an actress here. I would move to L.A, and i think if i really nagged my parents i would be allowed. But i just want to know if i actually have to go all the way into the states, to fulfil my dream. I mostly want to act in disney channel productions. So if you could give me some advice on how i could start my career it would be great.

Question -
Hi-
Im a 36 yr old male who has been a part-time actor for years with gigs far and few between. (I have a day job) How can make acting a full time profession without moving to L.A? I live in Tampa, FL and plan on moving to Miami. I love acting but I have very bad allergies and the pollution in Los Angeles hurts my lungs. I dread moving back to LA since I was out there for a while and suffered too much with allergies so I left. It kind of hurts my dreams. any suggestions?

Thanks Todd
Answer -
Todd,

Thanks for writing. Unfortunately, my advice is to find another career that can support you. 95% of all American feature films are cast out of Los Angeles. They may shoot elsewhere, but they cast here.

If you don't want to live in LA, the chances of you making a living as a film actor in Tampa or Miami are slim to none.

Have you considered doing theatre in the area?

Sorry for the bad news.

Phil

Phil-

Yes, I am doing theatre now. But I'm glad you offered some reasonable advice. I figured LA was were all the jobs were anyway.

Thanks again,

Question -
i snet a cover letter and some pics to an agency they called me the next and we scheduled an interview for the following week. i just got back from it. the lady was super nice told me that i was cute and had the girl next door look. I'm 15, 5'4, 100lbs, blonde hair and amber eyes, my stats are 32b, 23, 34. she said since i have NO expeirence at all that i needed to get some training and that they would train me for $1625 for 15 weeks of classes (a class a week)i would maybe get some jobs during the classes but little things..
i would love your opinion!

also do all agency ask for money to train you? i have heard that thats not true but i'm getting kinda confused
thank you for your help!

Answer -
Hi,
I'm sorry, but that is just not right. Agencies should not be asking you for money to train you. The only way you really learn anything is by shooting and working and on the job experience. "Girl Next Door Look" is what they say when you have a commercial look, which means you aren't suited for fashion. There is still a lot of commercial work available- catalog stuff, swimwear, acting, lifestyle, promotions etc. And possibly petite fashion. But high fashion, runway and editorial are out unless you grow another 5 inches.

I had a similar experience on my first visit to an agency. They told me I was very pretty and had the girl next door look. They were very postive about me modeling with them, but they said I will need to have training and highly recommended a convention. I was so excited by their attitude and compliments that I put down a deposit and scheduled my weekly classes. Besides, they said they could find me a little work while I was getting my training.

I learned absolutely nothing and wasted my money. At the convention, all the agents said I was "too commercial" for them (aka girl next door) And the jobs the modeling agency got me- well that was one promo job that paid $10/hr, where I had to stand in the boiling sun wearing a really stupid looking outfit and try and get people to sign up to win a car. Not the glamorous job I had envisioned!

So here is the bottom line- your agency may very well have better classes to offer and they may even have better work, so I can't say it is going to be that way. But when you go to a large and reputable agency, they will never ask you for money for training, classes, schools, etc. I have worked with probably 40 different agencies in the past 7 years and if any of them asked for money, I told them no thanks. You should not even have to pay to be represented on their website. They are there to make money by making you money, not by taking your money. Once you make money, they take a percentage and that should be the only way you are paying them.

If you happen to have the extra cash lying around and want to spend it, then taking the classes isn't going to hurt. But if you have to save up for this, then don't waste your time and hard earned money because this is not how models get started!

Good luck with whatever you choose!
-Candy

thanks candy,

Is his training as an actor to blame for his acting out his emotions in extreme ways?
