How to protect Empty Gunnite Pool in winter?

We recently purchased a home with a gunite pool which has been closed 2 years. The gunite and tile top was replaced only 3 years ago. It stunk and looked awful and contained 2 years of leaves and trash. My husband pumped it out, and acid washed the pool. It looks great. We were going to leave it empty for the winter and fill it up in the spring when we open it. We were told by a friend it will float up out of the ground unless we fill it now. What do we need to do to protect this gorgeous pool so we can enjoy it next summer. Winter here gets down to about zero degrees.

Preparing a gunite pool for winter needs deliberate planning and a full day's work. Gunite pools are constructed from a novel concrete compound, as they are built with concrete, they can be troublesome for homeowners living in colder areas. Gunite pools in these regions must be constructed with special supports in order to protect them from cracking. Additionally, special consideration must be given when preparing this type of pool for winter. Few instructions are given below:
    • Completely vacuum and skim your pool before initiating the winterizing process.
    • According to the manufacturer's instructions, backwash your pool filters.
    • Now unhook the pool pump and drain remaining water.
    • Drain the heater by blowing water with air compressor.
    • Now put a 20-oz. soda bottle in the skimmer basket, in order to accommodate any expansion and contraction caused by freezing.
    • Place duct tape on the openings of any open tubes. This will prevent unwanted guests out during the winter.
    • Remove all ladders and check the PH of the pool water then cover the pool with your pool cover.
