Virtual dub, AviDemux 2.4.2 Video Editor, pinnacle studio plus. The first 2 are freewares and a lot of ppl use virtual dub. I recently used avidemux and it seems cool. Pinnacle is a pay software, but seems popular.

I'm not a video person, but I know and use these to a limited degree. Worth a try.

Patience, my child. Like fine wines, it takes time to produce a quality product. If you are using dial-up, it could indeed take hours. Maybe you could copy it to a flash drive and bring to the one of a broadband friend.
