Do cellphones for kids give a false sense of security to parents? Lots of parents drop their kids off at the mall or movies with a cellphone and assume that means their kid will be safe. i don't buy this, phone is not going to protect your kid and any problems the kid is going to run into will not be solved by having a cellphone. The phone is not a substitute for being there and or making sure one of the other parents is around. Cellphone can allow you to talk to your kid when away but in majority of the cases it does not provide protection.

I dont think you should provide a cell phone for your child to create a sense of security - you do it to keep in touch and trust your kid. If you do buy a cell phone for your child, no matter the age, know exactly what you are purchasing and don't be swayed by your kid's pleading for something fancy when they don't need it. Some might call it protecting, but the phones my kids have do not have cameras or internet access, but are very basic calling and texting phones from Net10. They cost $20 so there is little worry about a loss and no contract to keep the children or myself tied to one device. I felt prepaid was the best way to go to ensure I had control over their usage in an affordable way and still get them coverage I needed them to have to keep in touch. Both my kids play sports and its necessary for me to keep in touch with them constantly after school so a prepaid company like Net10 lets me do that, but I have control over how many minutes they have and when they use their phones -- that's my security.
