    Due to the March 11, 2011, earthquake and tsunami centered in the neighboring Miyagi Prefecture to the north, the prefecture sustained substantial damage and particular attention as a result of the declaration of an “atomic power emergency” and the evacuation of thousands of residents living close to the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, part of which exploded at about 0830 GMT 12 March 2011. The plant is operated by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, and it is located in the town of Okuma in the Futaba District of the prefecture.
