I just heard on radio that Orson Welles' Oscar was up for auction. Of course they mentioned Citizen Kane as the most admired movie ever. I saw it some time ago and was underwhelmed. I think Third Man and didn't he do Touch of Evil were better movies. What are the reasons that critics hold Citizen Kane in such esteem?

Citizen Kane is an American Drama film and it was released in the year 1941, it was directed by Orson Welles. Some people say that it is the greatest movie of all time and the best features of the movie are its music and cinematography.
I agree that when my dad made me watch Citizen Kane as a kid (about ten years ago) I did not like it, or understand why it had reached such a legendary and esteemed status. However, the themes, motifs and symbolism hidden within \"Citizen Kane\" are actually quite extraordinary. For me to compile all of the reasons as to why this film is held in such high esteem would result in being quite lengthy, so I will try to consolidate the main reasons as best as I can.

The story of \"Citizen Kane,\" is in fact a very in-depth character analysis. As Charles Kane dies at the very beginning, we really never get to know or understand him, thus the quest to do so unfolds. The film focuses on how a man is neither driven by, nor defined by his achievements, possessions, or actions, but by something deeper. The critical acclaim of the film may lie in its depiction of The American Dream as less than desirable, and perhaps in its most realistic form (the first film to really do this). Kane's wealth isolates him, rather than fulfills him. We see that hsse has everything that is desired, yet he is miserably unhappy.

During the film's initial release, it was hated and dismissed, and only years later did it begin to earn recognition, and eventually evolved into being considered the greatest film of all time. It is still dismissed as boring, and seen through sophisticated 2007 eyes, it is. However, the bottom line is that \"Citizen Kane\" is held in such high regard, even today, for its undeniable complexity and uniqueness (especially for the era it was conceived in). Some people credit many different reasons for C.K.'s profound influence, but the ones mentioned above are the most widely believed.
