I have an 86 chevy 350, i parked it for a week and it turns over gets fuel, but doesnt seem to get spark. I am wondering if I should try to advance timing to try and get spark? what would you recommend?

first things first.. take out the #1 cylinder spark plug (drivers side closes to the front of the truck) slowly turn the motor over with a ratchet (there is a bolt in the middle of the crank balancer) until you can feel the piston at the top of the cylinder.. (pinky finger or keep poking in a piece of wire every "SMALL" adjustment.. when its at the top.. your at TOP DEAD CENTER TDC .. pop off your dist cap.. your now pointed at your #1 cylinder.. put your plugs back on the cap 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 with #1 wire sitting right above where your dis arm is pointing.. leaving the dist "JUST" loose enough to move it left to right with a bit of force.. try and start it up.. if you get the crack and pop threw the carb (leave air filter off.. or it can catch fire) or out the muffler.. then advance or restard it up to an inch in either direction.. if it still wont fire your 180* off.. pull your cap off and your dist up about 2" spin the pointer 180* and it will pop back down.. might need to play with it.. or be a tooth ahead behind.. but it will pop all the way back down.. then put the cap back on so it points to #6 (putting the cap back on the same way it was) and try again.. moving it forward or backward untill it starts.. once it starts.. put a timing gun on it and fine tune it..
