Celeste fig tree fruit production in lower South Carolina

My Celeste fig tree was loaded with figs this year and many of the figs ripened in late July. But the remaining figs are hard, small and green and don't seem to be ripening. What causes the figs to not continue to ripen? Is there anything that can be done to encourage the remaining figs to ripen?
