Light consists of electromagnetic radiation which is visible to human eye, in fact it would be appropriate to say that it is the portion of electromagnetic radiation which is visible to the naked eye. The wavelength of light is from 380 or 400 nanometers. Light has the properties like propagation direction, frequency and wavelength spectrum and polarization. Its speed is about 300,000,000 meters per second and is one of the fundamental constants of nature. Light is emitted by tiny packets called photons and it has the property of waves and particles. The study light is an important area in the modern physics and it is known as optics.
Light travel at a speed of 299,792,458 m/s which is equal to 186,282 miles per second. There were many past scientists who attempted to measure the speed of the light. Galileo measured the speed of light in the seventeenth century. In 1676 a Danish physicist used a telescope to measure the speed of the light. Light takes about 22 minutes to travel to the diameter of Earth’s orbit. In 1849 Hippolyte of Europe tried to measure the speed of light. He placed a beam of light several kilometers away. A rotating Cog wheel was placed in the path of the light beam as it traveled from one source to the other. The result of the experiment was that after a certain angle of rotation, beam passes through one gap to the next gap on the way back. There is no such sound of light when it is travelling to the air, if the light is produced by the positive and negative particles of object like case of thunderstorm then only a sound is produced.
