If an employer provides a worker with somewhere to live, it can be taken into account when calculating the minimum wage, up to a maximum of £4.82 a day or £33.74 a week. No other kind of benefit (eg food, a car, childcare vouchers etc) counts towards the minimum wage. Use the National Minimum Wage calculator to check if the minimum wage has been paid.
