i will be getting two girl gerbils or two boy gerbils soon, and i have researched all about gerbils so i know so much about them and know how to care for them. i've tried and tried and tried to find out if a boy pair of gerbils or a girl pair of gerbils would be better. this will be my first gerbil experience and i will be getting two only. no more, no less. i just need help deciding if a boy/boy pair or a girl/girl pair would be better. please note if you have had experience with gerbil pairs of either s*x. plese tell me which pair is better! thanks everyone!!! this is a huge help!

Two male gerbils. I own five male gerbils currently. Two of them are housed together and I have another cage with three of them together.

Female gerbils can be a bit more aggressive than male gerbils and as they age, can declan from their partner or group and can cause a bloody fight and even death.

As this can happen with any pair of gerbils, it is less likely to happen in a male same-s*x pair.

Male gerbils do not act any differently than females as far as temperament goes.

Make sure that you purchase/adopt two male or two female gerbils from the same cage so they are litter mates. This way, they won't have to go through a split-cage introduction and they will have lived with eachother their whole lives or most of their lives. Try to get younger gerbils...youngest as possible so they tame quickly. Gerbils are usually tame immediately.

Two of my boys are four years old and I have only had them since they were three years old.

My other two boys will be one year old this month. I have had them since they were four weeks old and they have been handled from a young age.

My other gerbil who is currently in split-cage introduction with my four year old boys is a five month old gerbil and he is the sweetest and calmest gerbil that I own.

Just goes to show you that purchasing/adopting at different ages can make a difference.

I think you should get two girl gerbils. I like to put down names!! I love making up names for people. Ask me if you can't think of a name!!

Gender is just a preference. Both a pair of males or a pair of females is great.

Males, typically, are larger, more laid back, and less territorial. Females, typically, are smaller, more active, and more territorial. However, if kept in pairs with enough room in their cage/tank, you shouldn't have to worry about aggression over territory.

Other than that, the only real difference is that males tend to scent mark more with their scent gland (patch of hairless skin located on their belly) by getting low and rubbing themselves on the object or even you and males have obvious testicles. Some people don't like that fact.

As you already know, I have two females and I think they're wonderful. They've never been aggressive towards each other. They absolutely adore one another. One will sometimes bully her sister around though :P They've never, ever shown aggression towards each other, though. A little sibling squabble doesn't harm, I suppose.

So, a pair of males or a pair of females is fine. If you're getting them from a breeder, I would recommend you ask the breeder to choose a pair, regardless of gender, that is closest to the temperament you're looking for in gerbils. For example, you may prefer gerbils that are social with humans and are always looking for people rather than gerbils that are social with humans but prefer to run and explore their cage.

If you're getting them from a pet store, you may only have one option. Pet stores, generally, only sell one gender. However, you must look for a pair that's healthy. Look for clean, bright eyes, clean nose, straight, sleek tail, no bite marks, etc. Ask an employee to handle the ones you're interested in to see how they tolerate being handled and how they interact with humans. Choose a pair that looks the healthiest, doesn't bite when handled, and isn't too fearful.

Def go with the boy gerbils, they are very less likely to fight when in heat compared to the girls , my gerbils had babies about 2 years ago and i had females together , during heat they started fighting and nearly killed each other , males dont fight when in heat they only stand their ground, basically block off an area they think is their own and wont let the other male near., they wont be aggressive like the females when all comes to all.
