Malcolm X was one of famous black leader who, as a key spokesman for the Nation of Islam, epitomized the "Black Power" philosophy. He was a courageous supporter for the rights of African Americans, as he indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans. His detractors blamed him of preaching racism, black supremacy, antisemitism, and violence. He has been called one of the famous and most admirable African Americans in history and in 1998; Time named The Autobiography of Malcolm X as one of the ten most influential nonfiction books of the 20th century. The beliefs explained by Malcolm X reforms during his lifetime. As a spokesman for the Nation of Islam, he preached that black supremacy and deified the leaders of the organization. He also advocated the separation of black and white Americans, which put him at odds with the civil rights movement, which was struggling towards integration. In 1964, Malcolm X became a Sunni Muslim, made the pilgrimage to Mecca and discouraged racism, while remaining a champion of black self-determination, self defense, and human rights. He wanted to work with civil rights leaders and explained his previous position with the Nation of Islam as that of a zombie. During the early 1960s, he had grown frustrated with the non-violent, integrated efforts for civil rights and concerned that blacks would ultimately lose control of their own movement. In February 1965, he was killed by members of the Nation of Islam; Malcolm had recently left the organization. But even in death, his teachings lived on in the rhetoric of other black power organizations including the Black Panther Party.
