Bilirubin was formerly referred to as hematoidin. It is the yellow breakdown product of normal heme catabolism. It is also resposible for the yellow color of bruises, urine and the yellow discoloration in jaundice.

Bilirubin is one of the significant pigments that are developed from the breakdown of heme in red blood cells. The broken down heme reaches to the liver, where it is secreted into the bile from the liver. Usually, a small amount of Bilirubin present in the blood. Serum Bilirubin is considered as an important test of liver function and it describes the liver's ability to take up, process, and secrete Bilirubin into the bile. It is a byproduct of RBC destruction and are conjugated in the liver and excreted in bile. If the Bilirubin in the blood is too high then it causes jaundice which is the yellowish discoloration of the skin. Bilirubin formation and excretion follows a specific route in the body. Bilirubin is being insoluble in blood and it binds to serum albumin which is almost yellowish in colour with slight shades of blue and red. It also appears yellow in serum. If the levels of Bilirubin become high in adults you will observe following signs:
    • Discoloration of the skin and eyes become white
    • Feeling of vomiting
    • Dark brownish yellow colored urine
    • High fever accompanied by chills
    • Clay colored or pale stools
    • Abdominal pain and swelling
    • Loss of appetite
