Barry Manilow was born Barry Alan Pincus on June 17, 1946, in Brooklyn, to Harold Pincus and Edna Manilow. He grew up in its low-income Williamsburg section. His father was a Jewish and was often known by the surname Keliher, was born to a Jewish father and Irish American mother. For some unknown reasons left the family when Barry was two. It is believed to be at this approximate time that he decided to change his family name for his own professional name. For this reason Barry went on to eventually adopt the maiden name of Manilow that belonged to her mother. He began playing piano and accordion at age seven, and following high school, he was accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music, which he paid for by working in the CBS mail room. From there, he became musical director of the CBS show Callback, and supported himself for the next few years by writing, producing, and performing advertising jingles. Living without his father Barry did not seem to be having a very good social life. The impact of the separation between his parents perhaps carried on to reflect even in his own married life. He married his school sweetheart, whose name was Susan, which ended after a period of no more than 18 months. This was so much mentally shattering for Barry that he never re-married again and thus living a life without family.
